Hello all!
So its about 2:30 AM in the morning (that was for you molly, i know how you love repitition in time differentiation...) and I just got back from this place called "The Pavilion" up on the hill overlooking Cincinnati. The place itself is pretty cool, its a multilevel bar and club type deal. The weather was nice outside so I spent most of the evening just sitting and talking with other interns. On a scale of one to ten I would rank it about a five. Ok envirnoment, I just don't know the people well enough yet to really enjoy hanging out with them for long periods of time. Its hard to find things to talk about after a while, so unless you want to get really drunk and make out with them you run out of things to do pretty quickly...
Quinn, I have thought about the question you proposed and Ihave some thoughts. Initially I thought it was ridiculous that the Bible be so commercialized and exploited like that, but when I started thinking I found some inconsistancies with that logic. First of all, if we say that the magazine Bible isn't ok, then what is? Should we all have plain black leather bound Bibles or is it ok to have a little color on the front? If you start saying that the outside appearance of the Bible is important then you get into dangerous territory really quickly. And I think that same logic can be applied to translations as well. Obviously the truth of the gospel shouldn't be jeopardized, but who really care what font its published in or what pictures surround it? Just like Paul talks about catering the presentation of the gospel to the audience, scripture is being catered to its expected audience.
Of course an issue in all of this is the motivation of the creators of this magazine Bible. I would be very naive to assume that it was out of a genuine desire to reach teens and preteens. And it looks a lot like they are straight up exploiting the word of God if you ask me. But who doesn't do that? Philippians 1:15 talks about how it doesn't matter what the motivation is behind those that preach the gospel, what matters is that the gospel is preached. As far as I can tell, thats what is happening here. People are attempting to capitalize on scripture, and in the midst of that selfishness maybe some preteen girls are benefiting from it. Flipping through a Bible instead of a Cosmo certainly can't hurt anything.
And there is my conservative take on things, lol. What do you guys think?
